WHAT TOOLS DO YOU USE FOR YOUR WORK?

For digital art, I employ Photoshop and Wacom. When it comes to traditional art, I rely on Canson Montval or Bristol paper, specifically 300gsm. My toolkit includes a 0.3 mechanical pencil along with a 0.3 mm B graffiti pen for precise lines. I also utilize 2B and 6B pencils. To make adjustments, I use a kneaded rubber. For inking, I employ disposable ink pens with various sizes such as 0.05, 0.1, and 0.8. Additional tools include a French curve set, a 40cm ruler, a light table, Crow quill nibs, and acrylic black ink.

As for inking brushes, my preferred choice is a round liner brush, specifically the Fine Liner Sable 2/0 302. While there are numerous brush formats available, I find this particular brush ideal for contouring, outlining, and executing intricate details. It offers a steady and precise stroke, making it popular among artists for their signatures.

However, I believe that each individual should test and select their tools based on personal preference. If nibs aren't suitable for you, consider using pens instead. If mechanical pencils aren't to your liking, opt for regular pencils. Avoid the misconception that acquiring the same tools as your favorite artist will automatically yield similar results, as the suitability of tools varies among individuals.

Technical skills play a crucial role, and each person possesses their unique set of abilities. Develop your own techniques through consistent practice and experimentation.

WHAT BOOKS WOULD YOU RECOMMEND TO THOSE INTERESTED IN CREATING COMICS?

I highly recommend three instructional books written by Will Eisner: "Graphic Storytelling and Visual Narrative," "Expressive Anatomy for Comics and Narrative," and "Comics and Sequential Art: Principles and Practices."

Another valuable resource is "How to Draw Noir Comics" by Shawn Martinbrough. Additionally, "Framed Ink: Drawing and Composition for Visual Storytellers" by Marcos Mateu-Mestre serves as an excellent starting point.

DO YOU UTILIZE REFERENCES? HOW MUCH TIME DO YOU USUALLY SPEND ON A SINGLE PIECE?

When it becomes necessary to depict specific individuals, environments, animals, or objects, I do refer to references. As for the time invested in each piece, I can pencil two pages or complete the pencil and inking process for one page within a day, depending on the level of detail involved.

MAY I HAVE YOUR PERMISSION TO COLOR ONE OF YOUR ARTWORKS?

Certainly! However, kindly ensure that proper credits and copyrights are given, including my name and a link to my gallery or the original piece.

"I like your art!" - CAN I GET IT TATTOOED ON MY BODY?

Absolutely!

DO YOU ACCEPT COMMISSION WORK?

Yes, I do. For further information, please reach out to me at: mr.m.udall@gmail.com.

I'M INTERESTED IN ENTERING THIS INDUSTRY: WHERE SHOULD I BEGIN? HOW DO I CREATE A PORTFOLIO?

Drawing from my personal experience, it's crucial to maintain flexibility and pay attention to the market's preferences, whether it's the US, European, or Japanese market. Each market possesses its own peculiarities, and it's essential to understand and adapt accordingly.

Ensure that your samples remain objective, presenting only the best and most significant work to the editors.

The first step towards capturing the attention of potential employers and securing new opportunities is to create an easily navigable online portfolio. This platform allows you to showcase your work on a global stage.

Additionally, remember to keep your best works updated.

Regarding samples, editors will carefully evaluate your storytelling skills, which involve the art of effectively conveying a story through panels. They will assess your ability to draw various elements with expertise, including character interactions, anatomy, gestures (expressing emotions through bodily movement), different character types (adults, teens, children), various environments (cities, jungles, parks, living spaces, offices), and diverse animals. Your creativity will be put to the test as you create monsters, aliens, and other fictional beings that do not exist in reality. Sometimes, you may be expected to possess knowledge of specific characters and be prepared to work on them even before meeting an editor.

In sequential pages, paying special attention to details can make a significant difference. For instance, if the story is set in New York City, incorporating specific references to well-known landmarks and maintaining fidelity to the architecture, cars, and people adds authenticity and helps readers connect with your characters and believe in your storytelling. These meticulous details will set your samples apart from the ordinary ones.

Initiate the process by sending your samples to small publishing houses. The likelihood of finding work and having opportunities for artistic growth and development is higher in such settings. As you acquire the necessary skills and experience, major publishers will begin to take notice. Approach the presentation of your work with an open mind and attentively listen to advice and critiques from professionals to improve your craft.

Never commence work without signing a contract and ensuring the client's signature as well. This step is vital as a contract is legally binding only when both parties have signed it. However, it is crucial to read and comprehend the entire contract before signing. This is not an oppressive measure but rather a reflection of mutual understanding between both parties.

Frequently update your social media platforms with your best work, keeping your audience engaged and informed.

Be original—remember that not all comic book publications revolve around superheroes. Present a diverse range of subject matters and storytelling genres to increase your chances of success.

If you do not achieve immediate results, do not give up. Persevere and try again. What may not appeal to one editor could be highly valued by another!

QUAIS LIVROS VOCÊ INDICARIA PARA QUEM QUER APRENDER A DESENHAR HQs?

Gosto dos livros instrutivos de Will Eisner: Narrativas Gráficas, Quadrinhos e Arte Sequencial. Existe um terceiro livro chamado 'Expressive Anatomy for Comics and Narrative', mas não tenho certeza se foi publicado no Brasil.

POSSO COLORIR OS SEUS DESENHOS?

Certamente.

With your permission I take the opportunity to present myself and make a proposal: I´m Xurxo Avila, a spanish actor, director, writer and producer. I have a horror script that I have not been able to shoot and I was thinking of turning it into a graphic novel for IMAGE COMICS -WE ALL WORK FOR MONEY- with the collaboration of one of my best friends, the USA`s editor and colorist JOSÉ VILLARRUBIA. I have seen your drawings and would you like to draw the story? I really like your style very much, I think it would go very well to the story and I think we could create a unique and fascinating horror story. I hope I didn't bother you with the proposal. The idea is to draw 6 scenes from the script (he told me that it is the usual number when you send it to any American comic book publisher), send them along with the same script and a lot of things that I have more (you can see some of them on my page, in the folder entitled: "CINEMA" : art concepts, posters,...) to the publisher and see if they like it and get us to work. If you want I pass the script to you, you read it, and you tell me. Greetings.
